About Us
Formally established as a separate department with both UG and PG programs in 1911, the department of English has provided quality education to hundreds of students hailing from socially and economically weaker sections of society. It has also had on its faculty such illustrious professors as S. Ramaswamy, Kriashnarayan a staunch Indian English critic, O.V. Vijayan a reputed Malayalam writer and translator, Dr. Beatrice D’Souza former Member of Legislative Council Tamil Nadu and Dr. V. Murugan a lexicographer and eminent translator. Since the time of its inception the curriculum for both UG and PG programs has been regularly updated with the primary objective of making the students socially efficient, economically sufficient and professionally proficient. While framing the syllabus an equal attention is also paid to the current trends in English language and literature so as to enable the students to crack the competitive examinations. On an average more than 50% of the outgoing students from UG and 70% of outgoing PG students manage to get their placement in both private and public sectors every year. In the past 5 years around 50 students have successfully cleared competitive exams like TET, NET, IBPS and TNPSC. The department also has one of the oldest libraries in the city exclusively meant for English literature. It has close to 9000 books which include more than a 1000 rare books on English language and literature. Such rare books are often borrowed by government bodies like the Teachers Recruitment Board (TRB) for their authenticity. Besides, the department enjoys the privilege of teaching maximum number of differently abled especially visually challenged students in an inclusive set up with the use of assistive technology.
