About Us
The department of Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology of Presidency College was established in the year 1886. The department has a unique Herbarium HCPM (Herbarium Collegii Presidentiae Madrasensis) with around 20,000 species. The great Prof. Fyson was from this department who served as Principal of this college. The department has produced thousands of post-graduates and research scholars who are serving industries and academics worldwide. Many great stalwarts and contributors for the growth of the biological knowledge had worked here. Prof. M. O. P. Iyengar (Phycologist), Dr. V. Krishnamurthy (Phycologist), Dr. C. V. Subramanian (Mycologist), Dr. T. S. Sadasivan (Plant Pathologist), Dr. B. G. L. Swamy (Geneticist), Dr. Janaki Ammal (Taxonomist), Dr. E. Govindarajulu (Taxonomist), Dr. Jayaraman (Anatomist) are few famous people who have studied and worked in this department.
